There is controversy in the literature over the role of taking random (nondirected) biopsies.810 This was addressed by Working Group 2 of the Colposcopy Standards Committee and they found no added benefit for women with low risk of precancer.11 The evidence from the literature is clear that sensitivity is increased with taking multiple biopsies.7,10 Working group 2 underscored this in most situations using a risk-based approach.11.
